Stupid Software Engineering Question of the Week…

November 3rd, 2008 by dan

My basic question is this; should my objects to have a default constructor, and if so, what should it do?
Say you have a class GeoLoc, for example, that represents a point on the surface of the earth. You’ll want a constructor GeoLoc(Longitude, Latitude) so that you can construct GeoLoc objects to represent specific place, e.g. [...]

Free M&S vouchers? or just spiced ham?

November 2nd, 2008 by dan

I’ve just been forwarded an email that was clearly spam-posing-as-viral-marketing-mail, but was none-the-less sufficiently sophisticated to fool the sender who forwarded it onto me. “…all you have to do is send this e-mail out to 8 people (for £100 of free vouchers) or 20 people (for £500 of free vouchers). Within 2 weeks you [...]

Online Photo Galleries

August 13th, 2008 by dan

I wrote this long piece on online photo galleries, but it was basically junk. All you need to know is…
If, like me, you just want to post some photos on the web for you, your friends and perhaps others to enjoy, then you have two options; Flickr and Facebook. What’s the difference?
Mr Flickr says: “Here’s [...]

Rebecca Faith, Photographer

August 5th, 2008 by dan

Becky (and her assistant, Rachel) took the photos for our recent wedding in Bristol. They were both excellent, and the photos are fantastic. I thought that the least I could do is give them some sort of online endorsement.
If you’re getting married, or need a photographer for anything else, then check out www.rebeccafaithphoto.com.

Who gives you extra?

August 1st, 2008 by dan

My bank sent me a letter offering to up their 7% interest rate on their regular saver to 10% if I keep £10k in their standard savings account for the same 12 month term. Sounds like a good deal, right? I mean, admittedly, they were offering 10% to new customers only about a month ago, [...]

SPATIALite

July 19th, 2008 by dan

I’ve got this vague idea about writing SPATIALite - Spatial extensions to SQLite. So far, I’ve given it a name. What happens next? Oh, yeah, “Ship it”.
UPDATE
Damn, it looks like somebody beat me to it. Still, my name was better. Plus, stealing other people’s work is way easier than doing it myself.

bish bosh bash…

July 19th, 2008 by dan

A friend gave me a CD full of jpg images… only the “.jpg” extensions were missing from the filenames. The macbook had no problems in viewing the files, but windows wasn’t having any of it unless I used Open As. And, of course, without any extension, I couldn’t “Always use this application for this file [...]

Apple 23″ Cinema Display and Windows XP

July 18th, 2008 by dan

Update: This page seems to get a surprisingly-high amount of traffic, seemingly from Google searches, so I thought the least I could do is polish it up and add some links…
I bought an Apple 23″ Cinema Display for our Windows XP desktop. Here’s what I’ve found:

The display has a DVI-D connector, plus a firewire and [...]
